    Sleep Apnea

Trouble sleeping at night? Dr. Aman can help relieve & treat your sleep apnea with a custom fit oral appliance.

You may not associate sleep problems with dentistry, but sometimes a dentist can provide the most effective solution to a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that is caused by a blockage at the back of the throat. People with sleep apnea literally stop breathing hundreds of times during the night. A sleeping person who stops breathing will awaken suddenly, but remain in a state of near sleep while they resume breathing, and then fall asleep again immediately. When this happens repeatedly throughout the night, the person wakes up in the morning unaware that they woke up so often. If you frequently wake up feeling tired even though you think you slept all night, you might have sleep apnea.

The common treatment for sleep apnea is a forced air machine called a CPAP. CPAP users wear a face mask that continuously forces air into their nose and mouth so that they can sleep without interruptions. While this is an effective treatment, many people have trouble sleeping with the cumbersome mask, and the machines are noisy.

“I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a decade ago and have struggled with a CPAP machine ever since. When Dr. Aman suggested an oral appliance to help with my sleep apnea, I was all ears. Today, the oral appliance has virtually done away with my sleep apnea symptoms.”

    – Mac, Oatlands, VA

Mac didn’t know what was worse: his sleep apnea diagnosis or the fact that he had to wear a CPAP mask in order to actually sleep.

“Although my symptoms were affecting my quality of life, the CPAP barely helped. I still felt fatigued and sleeping was really uncomfortable.”

During a routine dental exam at Leesburg Premier Dental, Mac and Dr. Aman talked about oral appliances, which help to keep the airway open during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. “It sounded too good to be true, but I gave it a try.”

Mac says his symptoms are improving daily after switching to the oral appliance that Dr. Aman custom-fitted for him. “I sleep through the night most nights with this thing. I love it and am so happy Dr. Aman suggested it. Thank you to the whole LPD team!”

Dr. Aman in Leesburg can provide a dental solution to sleep apnea that is smaller, more comfortable and more portable than a CPAP machine. It is an oral appliance or mouthguard that is fitted to each individual patient to fit perfectly. When wearing the mouthguard, the tongue and jaws are positioned so that tissue will not block the throat and cause breathing difficulties. The mouthguard is comfortable and allows sound sleep, uninterrupted for hours. The result is waking up in the morning truly rested.

Sleep apnea can cause problems associated with not getting enough sleep such as fatigue, irritability, relationship problems, poor work performance and more. A doctor must diagnose sleep apnea, but if the idea of a CPAP machine does not appeal to you, call Dr. Aman to discuss mouthguards and how they can relieve your sleep apnea symptoms comfortably.
